Health and Wellness

There is a well-known relationship between mental health and physical well-being. Our minds and bodies are connected. Chronic stress or anger can lead to chemical changes in the body. The release of cortisol, the “fight or flight” stress hormone, negatively impacts the immune system and our cardio-vascular functioning. Psychological and behavioral problems can also increase health-related issues including poor sleep, over-eating and chronic pain. We routinely screen our clients for Sleep-Wake Disorders and make referrals to appropriate specialists in the community. We are also qualified to conduct psychological evaluations prior to gastric bypass surgery.

The licensed mental health professionals at Family Psychology Associates have been trained to work with people to reduce concerns such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and isolation that often affect their physical well-being. Our therapists can also assist people suffering from chronic illness and chronic pain to better cope with these conditions, which may result in reduced use of medication and a resumption of activities. We provide individual therapy, family therapy and group counseling for clients who may face limitations on their ability to work. We can also be of support for clients confronted by a terminal illness.

Our health and wellness services promote lifestyle changes so that you can improve and maintain your physical well-being. We also encourage social engagement to offset the isolation that often accompanies chronic illness. We utilize Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to empower individuals to make healthy changes in their lives.

Counseling can focus on:

  • Developing good eating habits
  • Engaging in a regular exercise program
  • Learning to build stronger social connections
  • Reframing negative thinking that increases pain and physical illness experiences
  • Learning to distinguish between physical and emotional hunger
  • Practicing relaxation and mindfulness meditation skills
  • Reducing unhealthy and negative behavioral patterns

Family Psychology Associates offers individual and group therapy services, as well as Health and Wellness Workshops. One of our most popular services is our Mindfulness Meditation Workshop. We serve individuals of all ages and collaborate with you and your family to enhance your physical well-being and mental health. For more information, please visit our Contact Us.
