Peter Downes is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), practicing in Pinellas County for over ten years, working with adults on issues such as anxiety, depression, aging, physical/medical problems, and relationships.
Mr. Downes uses an eclectic approach, based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, focusing on finding goal-oriented solutions to immediate problems, rather than long-term analysis and therapy. “The problem is the problem; you are not the problem,” is a basic principle of his approach.
A graduate of Fordham University’s School of Social Work, Peter specialized in gerontology and issues of aging and also interned in the Palliative Care Unit of Coney Island Hospital. He has done post-graduate studies with the Beck Institute in Philadelphia, and New York’s Albert Ellis Institute. Before joining Family Psychology Associates he provided outpatient therapy as part of St. Anthony’s Primary Care Integrated Services program, teaming with physicians to provide whole-life services. Concurrently, Peter provided mental health services to patients and family members in St. Anthony’s Neurology Unit, which serves individuals with chronic neuro-cognitive conditions. Prior to joining St. Anthony’s, Peter worked with senior citizens in skilled-nursing, independent living, and assisted living facilities.
Before entering mental health, Peter had significant careers that provide a wide breadth of experience, from his time as a stock broker on Wall Street, to working in the Director’s office of the Brooklyn Museum of Art. He is passionate about mental health and enjoys seeing his patients become the best versions of themselves.
